Heavyweights drag Bursa Malaysia to close lower

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended slightly lower today due to losses in selected heavyweights.

At 5 pm, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) ended 4.1 points easier at 1,635.37, after moving between 1,628.24 and 1,641.41 throughout the day.

A dealer said the losses were, however, capped by bargain hunting activities.

“After yesterday’s sell-off some traders accumulated cheaper small and mid cap stocks,” he added.

Gainers led losers 423 to 322 while 318 counters were unchanged, 762 untraded and 12 others were suspended.

Volume increased to 1.98 billion shares, valued at RM1.95 billion, from 1.59 billion shares, valued at RM1.86 billion, recorded yesterday.

Among top losers were heavyweights Public Bank (-28 sen to RM18.12), RHB Capital (-17 sen to RM6.09) and Maxis (-15 sen to RM6.56).

Other heavyweights, Maybank added 11 sen to RM8.52, Tenaga was flat at RM12.18 and Axiata lost 8.0 sen to RM6.06.

Of actives, IFCA gained 5.5 sen to 87 sen, AirAsia lost a sen to RM1.37 and Aemulus increased 1.5 sen to 51 sen.

On the scoreboard, the FBM 70 was 32.8 points better at 12,326.34, FBM Ace increased 96.8 points to 5,539.9 but FBM Emas Index fell 11.92 points to 11,290.27.

The FBMT100 Index declined 14.29 points to 11,007.53 and the FBM Emas Shariah Index contracted 13.5 points to 11,927.3.

On a sectoral basis, the Finance Index gave up 64.47 points to 14,189.02, Plantation Index declined 10.16 points to 6,994.46 but the Industrial Index rose 31.4 points to 3,111.11.

Main Market volume rose to 966.95 million units, worth RM1.65 billion, from 936.4 million units, worth RM1.72 billion, recorded on Monday.

Turnover on the ACE Market more than doubled to 487.15 million shares, worth RM195.95 million shares, from 219.2 million units, valued at RM60.89 million, registered on Monday.

Warrants went up to 533.96 million units, worth RM98.15 million, from 442.83 million units, valued at RM77.84 million, yesterday.

Consumer products accounted for 58.87 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products (151.57 million), construction (47.41 million), trade and services (461.01 million), technology (32.81 million), infrastructure (12.46 million), SPAC (22.23 million), finance (53.75 million), hotel (1.4 million), properties (84.57 million), plantations (37.01 million), mining (12,000), REITs (3.72 million) and closed/fund (32,600). – BERNAMA
