High level committee setup to tackle human trafficking

SEPANG: A high level committee for human trafficking have been set up by the Home Ministry.

The committee meeting, minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, would be used to deal with the matter regularly.

In a statement by the minister, it was said that the decision to set up the high level committee came after a meeting held by the Council for Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (MAPO).

Earlier, Ahmad Zahid had met US Ambassador-At-Large on Trafficking in Persons Luis CdeBaca and the main purpose of his visit was to engage the minister and other government officials on the recent United States' State Department Trafficking in Persons (TIP) 2014 report.

In the report, Malaysia has been demoted to Tier 3 from Tier 2, which the nation was placed last year.
