MALACCA: A couple and a businessman were fined by the Magistrate’s court here yesterday for possessing contraband cigarettes worth RM1,327.80 at their mini markets.
Magistrate Sasha Diana Sabtu fined Yong Pett Youn, 54, and her husband Gan Ah Kon, 65, RM12,500 each in default of a two-year jail sentence, after they pleaded guilty of possessing illicit cigarettes in 1,066 packets with a total of 19,936 cigarettes.
They had committed the offence at Jalan Desa Duyong here at 10.30am on Nov 22, 2013.
Shasha Diana also imposed a RM1,500 fine in default of a five-month jail sentence on Hau Wan Soon, 51, for possessing 101 packets containing 2,020 illegal cigarettes at his mini-market in Taman Semabok Jaya, here at 10.40am on Sept 27, 2013.
All three were charged under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries a fine or three years jail, or both, upon conviction.
Customs Department prosecuting officer Ho Sing Hock prosecuted while all the accused were unrepresented. All of them paid their fines.
