In-form Messi can make the difference

FORMER Arsenal defender Sol Campbell believes that Argentina’s star Lionel Messi holds the key to winning his country the World Cup.

The 39-year-old, who was in Singapore for Arsenal’s regional Puma kit launch yesterday, said: “Germany have steamrolled over every country at this World Cup.

“They’ve got a really good system, and their goalkeeper, (Manuel) Neuer is playing like a sweeper, allowing the defence to play a really high line.

“Argentina, however, have got Messi, and if he comes into play, he could just go on and win the World Cup on his own.

“He is an unbelievable player who could make all the difference.”

The former England skipper, who featured in three World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006), also lamented the dismal performance of his country who failed to get past the group stage.

“I am very disappointed. This has got to be our worst performance in over 50 years.

“They must have a system, so much money has been spent, but are they looking into all the aspects of the game?

“Who is coaching the team? Are they really good coaches? And the players? They must realise that they are playing for England and not their clubs.

“A good coach must be able to break players’ ego, and use a player in the best possible position.

“Look at Germany’s (Philipp) Lahm, who is a defender but has been playing in midfield.

“He has not complained, because he is doing it for the team, his country.”

On a separate note, Campbell welcomed the signing of Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez, admitting Arsenal need a player who is mobile.

“I think Alexis is a great player, and Arsenal need players like this.

“He has good control of the ball, knows where the goal is and most importantly is someone who is mobile.” By Fabian Peter
