UPDATE: Lawas early morning massive explosion

LAWAS: State Fire and Rescue director Nor Hisham Mohamad said the Lawas gas explosion is from a Petronas natural gas pipeline near Bukit Beriku.

"We deployed a six fireman team to the scene but the fire was already under control by the Petronas first responders. We are working with Petronas to identify the cause of the incident," said Nor Hisham.

No injuries or casualties was reported from the incident.

Earlier report: An explosion believed to from a massive underground gas leak took place in a remote area near Bukit Berikau here at 2am.

Police chief Assistant Superintendent Mutang Nawat said the explosion could have been caused by air pockets in the gas rich area.

"We receive no reports on injuries or casualties as the incident happened quite far from the nearest settlement. But the flames ignited the night and it can clearly be seen from the sea and nearby districts of Sabah and Brunei," said Mutang.
