MH17 made headlines across the globe

KUALA LUMPUR: The tragic incident of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border was the main story on the front pages of many newspapers around the globe.

The “New York Times” carried the headline, “Jetliner explodes over Ukraine; Stuck by a missile, officials say”, while the “New York Post” had “Murder at 33,000 feet: 298 killed as missile shoots down airliner” plastered on its front page.

“Boston Herald” had the headline, “298 Lost in an instant: Officials say missile destroyed jet over Ukraine madness”.

“The Sun” (United Kingdom) carried the news with the headline, “Putin’s Missile: Flight MH17 shot out of sky”, while “Daily Mirror” had “Slaughter at 33,000 ft” as its headline.

The “Herald Sun” (Australia), on its front page, carried the story “27 Aussies killed in missile attack”.

The “Irish Examiner”, an Irish national daily newspaper had the headline, “Mid-air Massacre: 80 children among 295 passengers killed”.

While, “Die Welt” a German national daily newspaper, “Lidové noviny”, a daily newspaper published in the Czech Republic, “Le Figaro”, a French daily newspaper, “Gazeta Wyborcza”, a newspaper printed in Poland, “La Repubblica”, an Italian daily general-interest newspaper, and “El País”, an Uruguayan newspaper also featured MH17 as their cover story.

“Kommersant,” a nationally distributed daily newspaper published in Russia had the news on its front page as well.

The MH17 jetliner, a Boeing 777-200 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, when it crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border.

MH17, carrying 298 passengers and crew departed Amsterdam at 12.15pm (Amsterdam time) on Thursday and was due to arrive at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.10am (Malaysian time) on Friday.

The fatalities count as of 11.40am were as follows:

Netherlands (192, including one dual Netherlands / US citizen), Malaysia (44, including 15 crew and two infants), Australia (27), Indonesia (12, including one infant), United Kingdom (10, including one dual UK / South Africa citizen), Germany (four), Belgium (four), Philippines (three), Canada (one), and New Zealand (one).
