Healthy inside out

Mental health is, in many ways, adjusting how you think, feel and deal with life’s ups and downs. Shuhada Elis offers some tips

1. Connect with others

Develop and maintain strong relationships with people who will support and enrich your life. You may not realise it, but putting time and effort into building strong relationships can be truly rewarding.

2. Let your hair down and enjoy

Let yourself be spontaneous and creative when the urge takes you. Set aside some time to paint a picture, sew a quilt, draw with your kids or bake a cake — whatever it is that makes you happy.

3. Participate and shareinterests

Join a club or a group of people who share your interests. Being part of a group of people with a common interest gives a sense of belonging and is good for mental health.

4. Give back

Volunteer your time for a cause or issue that you care about. There are many ways to contribute which can help you feel good about yourself. An effort to improve the lives of others will definitely improve your life too.

5. Take care of yourself

As physical and mental health are closely linked, you should always eat well and keep fit. You don’t have to go to the gym. Gardening, vacuuming, dancing and walking count too!

6. Challenge yourself

Learn a new skill or take on a challenge to meet a goal. Learning improves mental fitness while striving to meet your goals. It builds skills and confidence. So sign up for that kickboxing class you’ve always wanted to join!

7. Deal with stress

Find out what triggers your stress and be aware of how you react. You may be able to avoid some of the triggers and learn to anticipate them. If you have trouble winding down, you may find that relaxation breathing, yoga or meditation can help.

8. Rest and refresh

Get plenty of sleep. Go to bed at a regular time each day and practice good habits to get better sleep. Sleep restores both your mind and body.

When you have a hectic day, allow yourself some unfocused time to refresh. For instance, let your mind wander, daydream, or simply watch the clouds go by.

9. Notice the here and now

Take a moment each day to develop your senses. Simply feel the sun and notice the air you are breathing. Practicing mindfulness, by focusing your attention on being in the moment is a good way to do this.

10. Ask for help

This can be as simple as asking a friend to babysit while you take some time out for yourself, or speaking to your doctor, counsellor or community mental health service. The perfect, worry-free life does not exist but if you don’t get the help you need, keep asking until you do.
