Best of Indonesia and Malaysia

GEORGE TOWN: ASEAN artists have once again come together in the spirit of friendship to further strengthen bilateral relations through art.

In the joint exhibition entitled “Malaysian/Indonesian Fusion Art”, the artists display their respective talent in a series of artworks, including sculptures, at Galeri Seni Mutiara at 118, Lebuh Armenian until Sunday.

Organised by Kuala Selangor-based Sasaran Art Association (SAA), the cross-border showcase of artistic talents comprises a phalanx of more than 30 artworks in motley styles and media by 11 Malaysian and nine Indonesian artists.

SAA president Eng Bee, also a participating artist, said the association enjoyed a regular correspondence with Asean artists and joint exhibitions were held in the spirit of solidarity in all the countries involved.

“A cordial relationship has been established among artists in the countries in the region and beyond.

“Joint exhibitions have been held between the countries on a regular basis, and for this joint exhibition with our Indonesian counterparts, we have invited artists who have never held exhibitions here. This is to give them the opportunity to showcase their talent in Penang,” he said.

Spokesman for the Indonesians, artist Hadi Soesanto said for this exhibition, artists from Jakarta, Jogjakarta, Solo and Papua were invited.

“All the Indonesian artists here are between the ages of 30 and 50, well-established and masters of their respective fields.

“The artists have put forward their best work and are very excited to display their work alongside those of their Malaysian friends,” he said.

Gallery director Koay Soo Kau said it was important for art galleries to showcase artworks with international artists, in the interest of art.

“This exhibition is not just about hanging paintings on the wall. More importantly, it is about interaction, gaining insight into each other’s work and exchanging views and ideas.

“What better way to enjoy art than together in an environment of camaraderie, bonding and mutual respect?

“The artworks may appear different, but they are similar in the sense that art is an international language transcending race, religion and culture,” said Koay.

The rest of the participating Malaysian artists are Chow Chin Chuan, Chua Cha Hui, Izmer Ahmad, Jack Ting, Low Che Peng, Loh Bok Lai, Lim Ai Woei, Lee Chea Hong, Louis Low Seok Loo and Ng Kim Heoh.

Joining Hadi from Indonesia are Hari Budiono, Bambang Pramudiyanto, Dani “King: Heriyanto, Emmy Go, Lenny Ratnasari Weichart, Suibertus Sarwoko, Sulistyo and Wilman Syanur.

The exhibition was launched by eminent Malaysian artist Datuk Tay Mo-Leong.
