Third highest number of crashes

MUAR: Johor ranked as the third state to have the highest number of road accidents in the country while Kuala Lumpur topped the list followed by Pahang.

State Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said according to statistics provided by the police, the total number of accidents in Johor throughout last year stood at 64,600 cases with 1,133 deaths.

In the first six months of this year, the Road Safety Department recorded 31,975 cases of accidents with 539 deaths compared to 236 cases in the same period last year.

He said most of the accidents were caused by human factor (86.74 per cent), environmental factor (10.62 per cent) and vehicle factor (2.64 per cent).

Tee said motorists must adopt a tolerant and patient culture while on the road.

“We were shocked to read about the case of a road bully who took the law into her own hands after an elderly man had knocked into her new car from behind.

“The woman driver actually hit the man’s car with a steering lock.”

He said this after launching the Balik Kampung Road Safety Campaign at the Dewan Jubli Intan’s car park here recently.

The campaign was organised by the Motorcycle and Scooter Trade Association Malaysia and co-sponsored by Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Bhd.

Among those present were MCA deputy national youth chief Chris Lee Ching Yong, Muar Motorcycle Trade Association chairman Cheong Beng Chio and the association’s adviser Lim Kok Hwa. By Chong Chee Seong
