Bursa Malaysia ends on firm note

KUALA LUMPUR: Share prices on Bursa Malaysia closed higher today, lifted by gains on selected heavyweight counters, dealers said.

At 5pm, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 2.72 points better at 1,871.36, after moving between 1,868.03 and 1,874 throughout the day.

A dealer said the local sentiment was in sync with those of regional bourses as investor confidence was boosted on the first signs of cooperation from Ukraine's pro-Russian separatists over the downed Malaysian Airlines' plane.

"The situation has helped to ease the recent market nerves, lifting sharesboth in Europe and Asia," he said.

On the scoreboard, the Finance Index dipped 48.62 points to 17,394.86 and the Plantation Index slipped 7.83 points to 8,998.06.

The Industrial Index rose 17.58 points to 3,229.8.

The FBM Emas Index advanced 20.33 points to 13,062.23, FBMT100 Index added 19.16 points to 12,645.27, the FBM 70 gained 24.71 points to 14,347.3 and the FBM Ace jumped 74.33 points to 6,988.13.

Gainers led losers 470 to 383, with 320 counters unchanged, 461 untraded and 21 others suspended.

Total volume increased to 2.57 billion units valued at RM2.07 billion, from 2.4 billion units valued at RM2.14 billion transacted on Monday.

Among actives, Malaysia Airlines rose three sen to 23 sen, Talam Transform went up one sen to 12 sen and PDZ Holdings added two sen to 17 sen.

Sumatec, however, eased one sen to 41 sen.

Of the heavyweights, Maybank slipped one sen to RM9.90 and Public Bank dipped 10 sen to RM20.02.

TNB improved eight sen to RM12.38 and Axiata was two sen higher at RM6.89.

Main Market volume rose to 2.12 billion units valued at RM1.97 billionfrom 1.92 billion units valued at RM2.03 billion on Monday.

Turnover on the ACE market declined to 383.98 million shares worth RM89.25million from Monday's 416.38 million shares worth RM104.1 million.

Warrants advanced to 58.97 million units valued at RM8.08 million from 27.01 million units worth RM403.58 million previously.

Consumer products accounted for 136.28 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products 270.47 million, construction 93.77 million, trade and services 959.66 million, technology 58.54 million, infrastructure 26.38 million, SPAC 57.86 million, finance 51.18 million, hotels 7.05 million, properties 421.43 million, plantations 25.03 million, mining 35,000, REITs 4.44 million and closed/fund 34,200.-- Bernama
