Witness: It was like a meteor shower

DONETSK: She herds her goats every day to a field in Grabovo where they graze.

It is a simple life, one fraught with nothing more than routine and hard work in order to eke out an existence.

But Ereyna, as she only wanted to be known, never guessed that her routine would be interrupted in such a spectacular yet sad fashion last week.

Routine, in fact, turned into a nightmare for the 60-year- old.

Speaking with the aid of a translator, Ereyna recounted how she saw pieces of an aircraft -- Malaysia Airlines flight MHq7 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur -- come plum meting to the ground nearby "like a meteor shower".

"There were so many pieces, spread out over a large area. Some fell in the field where my goats graze as well.

"Then I heard a loud explosion and saw thick smoke from where I guess the most amount of wreckage was found, about a kilometre from my home," she said.

Eleyna said she and several other villagers rushed to the spot where the thick smoke was coming from and were horrified by what they saw.

"It looked like the entire area had been bombeed," she said.

Eleyna said the small group of villagers could only stand by and watch as the entire area was on fire. They were also afraid that more explosions could occur.

She said they did not know thag it waa a commercial aircraft, only finding out later from media reports.

"We don't even know where Malaysia is located... never heard of it before.

"At first we thought it was a military aircraft show down in a battle... that's whatt it is like in a war zone after all. After finding out what happened, I felt really sad for the people on that aircraft," she said.

Checks in the field where Eleyna grazes her goats revealed a section of the fuselage of the aircraft in a slightly overgrown area some 500m from the main crash site.

There were no scorch marks on the piece, possibly from the rear of the aircraft. In fact, some of the windows were still intact.

Also found were travel documents from a Dutch family of three who, based on tourist brochures found with the documents, were on their way for a holiday in Malaysia.

Among the brochures was a booking for a visit to the Petronas Twin Towers on July 18.

Based on an itinerary also found, the family planned to stay a week, with a short visit to Langkawi also on the cards.
