GYMNASTICS: Silver and Bronze in hands

GLASGOW: Gold was unreachable but Wong Poh San still walked tall at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow today as she won the ribbon silver and hoop bronze to end her Commonwealth Games rhythmic gymnastics campaign.

Canada's Patricia Bezzoubenko was the star, winning the hoop, clubs and ball gold medals to add to the team and all around titles won earlier but Poh San was Malaysia's darling.

She started the day with the hoop bronze, scoring 14.650 while Patricia hit 14.800 for the gold and Francesca Jones (14.750) of Wales took the silver, the first of three she won before denying the Canadian a clean sweep of the gold medals by winning the ribbon title.

Malaysia's second gymnast in the hoop, Amy Dict Weng Kwan finished sixth with 14.200.

With Poh San not having qualified for the ball final, hopes were on Amy to deliver but she could only manage a fifth place finish, scoring 13.650 as Patricia won her fourth gold of the Games with 15.250.

Francesca again took the silver with 14.875 while her compatriot Laura Halford (14.550) won the bronze.

The Malaysians failed to perform in the clubs final, as Amy finished seventh with 13.900 and Poh San ninth, scoring 13.375.

Patricia was unstoppable, taking the gold with a score of 15.350 while Francesca had to settle for silver again with 14.800 while Themida Christodoulidou of Cyprus won the bronze with 14.300.

That left the ribbon as Malaysia's last hope for a medal from a sport which delivered one gold, one silver and three bronze in New Delhi four years ago and Poh San scored 14.250 to momentarily lead with Patricia and Francesca yet to perform.

Francesca was up first, scoring 14.500 and then came the awesome Patricia but the crowd at the SSE Hydro was left shocked as the judges only awarded her 13.800, which left her in the bronze medal position.

That led to an inquiry from Canada which the judges rejected and as Francesca celebrated her gold after having played bride's maid to Patricia in the all around individual and earlier three events, Poh San exchanged hugs with Amy.

The three Malaysians - Fatin Zakirah Zain Jalany is the third member - all returned with medals as they had won the team bronze on Thursday.
