Commonwealth Games: Nicol saunters to gold

GLASGOW: Nicol David delivered Malaysia's second Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medal in emphatic fashion as she routed England's Laura Massaro at the Scotstoun Squash Complex today.

Except for the first game, it was an embarrassingly one-sided final between the World No 1 and reigning world champion as Nicol scored a 12-10, 11-2, 11-5 win.

In retaining the gold she won for the first time in the 2010 edition, Nicol become the first player to win back-to-back titles since squash was introduced in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.

Laura, who won the world title in Penang earlier this year, simply had no answers as Nicol displayed the quality that has seen her dominating squash for almost a decade.

She now turns her attention to the doubles, where Nicol and partner Low Wee Wern will attempt to add another medal to the Malaysian haul.

Nicol's gold came after lawn bowlers Fairul Izwan Abd Muin-Muhd Hizlee Abdul Rais produced a disappointing performance in the pairs final, losing 20-3 to Scotland at the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre.

It was Malaysia's second lawn bowls silver after Emma Firyana Saroji, Nur Fidrah Noh, Nor Hashimah Ismail and Azlina Arshad had finished second in the women's fours on Sunday.

Today's medals bring Malaysia's overall tally to 2 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze with the result of the badminton mixed team final against England yet to come.
