Commonwealth Games: Shuttlers keep gold in Malaysia

GLASGOW: Victory was achieved, against some though odds it must be said, as the national shuttlers completed a hat-trick of Commonwealth Games mixed team gold at the Emirates Arena on Monday.

Woman singles Tee Jing Yi delivered the winning point but it was a team effort that got them past the finish line as Malaysia beat England 3-1 in the final.

Victory, one could sense, was something Malaysia had been confident of after having beaten Singapore in the semi-finals on Sunday.

Still, it was a win which the shuttlers relished, especially as there had been strong doubts as to whether they would be able to continue the domination which started in the 2006 edition in Melbourne.

Jing Yi, coaxed back into the BA of Malaysia fold after having quit the team last year, was ecstatic at having delivered the winning point after a 21-16, 21-17 win over an error-prone Sara Walker.

"I am so glad to have won, especially as I too made numerous mistakes," said Jing Yi.

Malaysia got off to a losing start though as mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Lai Pei Jing - the match-winners in the semi-final against Singapore - lost 21-14, 26-28 to Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock.

Then came Chong Wei Feng but he had to go the full distance before securing a 21-17, 19-21, 21-19 win over Rajiv Ouseph, silver medallist behind Lee Chong Wei four years ago.

Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong put Malaysia into the lead with a 21-19, 21-17 win over Adcock-Andrew Ellis in the men's doubles and Jing Yi wrapped things up and the shuttlers can now look forward to the individual events which begin today.

The badminton gold was Malaysia's second of the day as Nicol David easily retained her squash singles title after beating world champion Laura Massaro.

Nicol's gold was the 50th Malaysia have won at the Commonwealth Games, the 11th nation to achieve the feat. Nicol's win also meant she is the first to have won the singles title twice, having first won in New Delhi four years ago.

Malaysia also won a silver in the lawn bowls men's pairs through Fairul Izwan Abd Muin-Muhd Hizlee Abdul Rais, who lost 20-3 to Scotland in the final.

Malaysia's medal tally now stands at three gold, five silver and four bronze.
