Commonwealth Games: Daren sent packing

GLASGOW: Liew Daren crashed out of the Commonwealth Games men's singles at the Emirates Arena today, losing tamely to India's P. Kashyap in the quarter-finals.

The Indian won 21-13, 21-14 to end hopes of an all-Malaysian final.

Wei Feng, meanwhile, will meet R.V. Gurusaidutt of India later today and a win will see him play either Singapore's Derek Wong or Srikanth Kidambi of India in the semi-final tomorrow.

There was better news from the women's doubles as Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo, who are dark horses for the gold, beat Jennifer Fry-Sandra Le Grange of South Africa 21-7, 21-10 and will play either England's Gabrielle Adcock-Lauren Smith or Canada's Alex Bruce-Phyllis Chan in the semi-finals.

Men's doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Malaysia's other gold medal hopes, play Robbin Middleton-Ross Smith in their last eight tie later today.

In other matches, Tee Jing Yi will meet India's P.C. Thulasi in the women's quarter-finals and a win will see her playing either Michelle Chan of New Zealand or Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in the semi-finals.

Mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Lai Pei Jing play Singapore's second seeds Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Vanessa Neo for a place in the semi-finals.

There was not to be another medal from table tennis after the women's team silver as Beh Lee Wei-Ng Sock Khim, after fighting back from two games down, were beaten 8-11, 5-11, 11-8, 13-11, 6-11 by Canada's Luo Anqi-Zhang Mo in the quarter-finals.

Lee Wei-Sock Khim were the last Malaysians standing, having beaten India's Ankita Das-Poulomi Ghatak 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4 earlier today, after Lee Rou You-Ho Ying fell 11-9, 11-9, 11-5 to New Zealand's Li Chunli-Karen Li 11-9, 11-9, 11-5 in the third round.
