Local cuisine takes centre stage

KUALA LUMPUR: The management of Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) is organising its Feast Of Malaysia event in conjunction with Merdeka Day.

The food extravaganza, which takes place from Aug 29 to 31, will offer a smorgasbord of Malaysian food in an indoor carnival-like atmosphere.

At a press conference, Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, said: “Feast of Malaysia will give Malaysians a chance to enjoy the best traditional and modern Malaysian fare under one roof.

“We are inviting the best food operators and entrepreneurs in the country to offer their fare. Over 200,000 visitors are expected to visit PICC during the event.

“From roti canai, ayam golek, ayam masak merah to roti canai, char kuey teow, rojak, nasi lemak and plenty more, there won’t be a shortage of variety when it comes to the food during the celebration.

“Malaysians are lucky to be able to enjoy food from different cultures and traditions. We want the locals and tourists to come here and have a good time.”

He said it will help to promote Malaysian cuisine to the rest of the world and we hope that more tourists will get to enjoy the staggering variety of food and beverages that we have to offer.

“Over 200 food and beverage stalls will be set up. I have been appointed as a special consultant by the management of PICC to oversee the event and to ensure that there will be lots of fun and exciting activities for the visitors,” said Redzuawan.

Fan will be thrilled to note that there will be a “Chef Wan” corner where his books will be on sale and visitors can watch him demonstrate his cooking skills.

Other local celebrity chefs, such as Florence Tan, Celine Marbeck, Agnes Chang, will also be participating in the event.

There will be competitions for the public and culinary students.

The competitions are aimed at boosting the self-esteem and confidence of budding chefs and culinary students and prepare to be professional chefs.

If you want to learn more about Malaysian cuisine, especially dishes which are not so easily available, there will be discussion sessions too. Visitors can talk to experts about the dishes, and learn how to prepare these lesser known dishes.

A special fireworks exhibition will be held at the PICC’s viewing deck where visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Putrajaya and fireworks display.

Traditional and ethnic dances are on the programme.

Present at the press conference were Putrajaya International Convention Centre Sdn Bhd corporate planning and business strategy senior general manager Tuan Syamsani Tuan Mansor, its chief executive officer Badlishah Ahmad and Putrajaya International Convention Centre Sdn Bhd food and beverage operations general manager Mahmad Anuar Othman.
