KUALA LUMPUR: The Manipal Alumni Association of Malaysia (MAAM) is organising an event themed “Breast Cancer Is A Word, Not A Sentence” to educate the public on breast cancer on Thursday.

Breast Lumps — When Do I Worry?, Women Cancers, Is There Life After Breast Cancer? and The New Beautiful You After Breast Cancer Surgery are among the topics that will be covered in the two-hour programme to be held at the lower ground, North Circle, eCurve, Mutiara Damansara here.

Among the panel of speakers are Dr Patricia Gomez (Pantai Hospital consultant breast surgeon), Dr Jean Arokiasamy (NHS, United Kingdom) and Dr Rema Kunjappan (BraVida director).

At the event, Amnah Salleh, a breast cancer survivor and Breast Cancer Welfare Association volunteer will also share her experience in overcoming cancer with a talk titled Is There Life After Breast Cancer? Yes!

The breast cancer awareness programme is a community service project by MAAM which runs in conjunction with the 1st Global Manipal Alumni Health, Science and Technology Convention and 28th MAAM Convention taking place at the Royale Chulan on Thursday and Friday.

“We have over 7,000 alumni in Malaysia contributing significantly to the health of the nation,” says MAAM president Dr Nirmal Singh.

“This is one of the ways we can contribute to the community.”

“Breast cancer is the No 1 cancer killer of Malaysian women with the incidence of 1 in 20 Malaysian women getting breast cancer.

“Through these programmes, we can help educate the public on what they need to know.

“What we are trying to tell the people is there is hope and that early intervention can help save them if given the right information and right treatments.”

Apart from the talks, MAAM will also be giving free BMI, blood sugar and cholesterol tests during the event.
