Water rationing to be decided Friday

SHAH ALAM: The decision on whether the people of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will have to face yet another round of water rationing will be made Friday.

State spokesman for water issues, Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Utilities committee chairman Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said the decision will be made after the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting.

"We will let you know if there is going to be water rationing after the MTES meeting on Friday. We did not discuss about water rationing today," he said after the weekly state executive council meeting, here.

Water level in six out of seven dams in Selangor has decreased between 0.38 to 2.91 per cent this week compared to last week.

Water level at the Sungai Selangor Dam, which is a source of raw water for 60 per cent of the Klang Valley and Putrajaya, is now down to a worrying 32.48 per cent, just two per cent above the 30 per cent critical mark.

Yunus reiterated that there is still enough water from the mining ponds but admitted that there was no alternative source for the time being although cloud seeding is conducted twice a day with the help from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), Malaysian Meteorological Department and AF Jet Sdn Bhd in all Selangor catchment areas

In a separate statement, Yunus said the state government is carrying out all mitigation steps announced and would increase the number of pumps used starting Aug 8.

He said the Selangor Health Department has also conducted water quality sampling at the pools and the samples analysed by the Chemistry Department until July showed that the heavy metal parameters did not exceed the Malaysian Water Quality Standards.

Yunus also stated that he believed that water from the alternative pools was still enough to supply raw water to treatment plants until October when the north east monsoon will carry heavy rain during the monsoon change.

The last water rationing was carried out when the water level at Sungai Selangor Dam was at 46 percent.

The lowest water level of Sungai Selangor during the last rationing exercise was at about 36 percent.
