KL soup kitchens reopen

KUALA LUMPUR: SOUP kitchens are permitted to operate without a time frame, but their cleanliness would be monitored by Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor previously said the ministry had set Aug 16 as the last date for the soup kitchens to operate.

“There are now no problems for the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to carry out their activities. We have discussed and identified temporary shelters for them to operate from.

“My secretary-general and the mayor will issue a full statement on Wednesday on the matter. The public needs to know we sit down with the NGOs from time to time,” he said after officiating the Ex-Army Association’s annual general meeting here yesterday.

It was earlier reported that all NGOs that conducted soup kitchen activities were permitted to continue giving out food to the homeless until Aug 16, after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

Aug 16 was agreed upon as the new enforcement date to disallow food from being distributed to the homeless within a 2km radius from the city. Bernama
