LITTERBUGS: More efforts needed toenhance cleanliness

AS one who is on the streets daily, I have observed the state of cleanliness of our streets and back alleys leaves much to be desired.

Anti-litter campaigns held over the years have not produced the desired results.

Despite the efforts of Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and other service providers, our streets are still far from clean compared with other cities in the world.

It is obvious more efforts are needed to enhance the cleanliness of our towns and cities.

Beside increasing the efficiency of Alam Flora and local authorities, another important factor is the attitude of the public who have not given up the dirty habit.

This is not only happening on our streets, but also at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang.

There is much litter along the pick-up and drop-off points for cars and airport limousines, just outside the departure and arrival areas, especially during the morning and evening peak hours.

Irresponsible people littered the passages along the drop-off areas with cigarette butts, tissue paper, water bottles and plastic bags.

I hope Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad will ensure their cleaners do their job efficiently and maintain cleanliness at all times.

It is time for us to review our anti-littering drive and take whatever measures needed to enhance cleanliness in our cities and towns.

There is a need not only to continue with civic education, but also beef up law enforcement to discipline habitual offenders.

The most effective penalty is to commit them to a "community service order" where they will be required, by law, to perform it in full view of the public.
