New cell opens at landfill

PAPAN: THE opening of the fourth new high capacity cell at a landfill in Ulu Johan here is expected to accommodate wastes up to 500 tonnes a day.

The cell, which sits on a 4ha piece of land and comes under the Ipoh City Council Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill, is managed by Syarikat Selekta Spektra Bhd.

Its general manager, Kingston Loo, said the fourth cell is the biggest sanitary landfill in the state, standing at a height of 15m, and will start operations next month.

“The fourth cell is located adjacent to a 229ha site where the first three cells are located and are now being fully utilised. Each cell takes about 18 months to be filled up with waste.

“The waste will naturally produce methane gas. We have plans to extract the gas to generate power via a bio-gas plant, to be constructed here next June.

“For 500 tonnes of rubbish, we can generate two megawatts of electricity per day. Therefore, we intend to collect more rubbish covering Kampar, Batu Gajah and Perak Tengah, apart from Ipoh, to enable us to generate about 3.5 megawatts of electricity daily,” he told reporters during a site visit on Thursday.

Loo said the electricity would then be sold to Tenaga Nasional Bhd for public consumption.

“We also give our assurance that the rubbish thrown at the landfill will be covered and sprayed with chemicals daily in order to minimise the foul smell seeping into the nearby towns,” he added.
