The marriage dilemma

The ups and downs of a marriage and its challenges are dealt with in the romantic comedy play Projek Kahwin

THE topic of marriage has always been popular with playwrights and filmmakers. The ups and downs of a marriage, and the challenges potential spouses face en route to marriage are now presented on stage with Projek Kahwin. The story deals with the challenges faced by newlyweds.

Currently staged at Istana Budaya until tomorrow, it is a production of Mask Team and IIAN Enterprise.

The play is directed by Muhammad Azri Ali, 25, a creative technology (theatre directing) and acting graduate from the Film, Theatre And Animation Faculty of Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam. He was previously involved in the musical Upin Dan Ipin and the plays Maduku Kalut, Tycikoouns and Assyura.

Projek Kahwin is a straightforward romantic comedy with lots of subtle critiques on modern society. It also poses important questions with regards to family relationships and their dynamics for spouses.

It stars popular film and television actors Izzue Islam Mazlan, Kilafairy, Hanez Suraya Aziz, Shah Iskandar, Kaka Azraff, pop group Forteen and Imam Muda star Asyraf Ridzuan. Also starring are budding actresses and radio personalities Zulin Aziz (a graduate of Datuk Rosyam Nor’s actor search Pilih Kasih Season One) and Sherry Alhadad (of the hit film Kolumpo), and popular theatre actors Fazleena Hishamudin, Shahkimin and Azhar Zainal.

Its music director is Anas Ridzuan of Mentor Season Six fame.

The protagonists Rizal and Nisa (played by Izzue and Hanez respectively) are engaged and about to get married but face obstacles when their extended family members try to control the marriage ceremony down to the last detail. In the process, Rizal and Nisa as well as their respective parents and siblings get into a crisis.

The issues that are dealt with in the story include extravagance, rigid adherence to traditions in the face of modernity, the role of women in society, filial piety and respect for authority, and the pros and cons of arranged marriages.

The director and his production team based their play on realistic experiences of newlyweds in the country but add lots of spice and sweetness to this thought-provoking, yet fun-filled story.
