Seeking redemption

IT is a matter of pride for Chong Wei Feng who wants to redeem himself in the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Aug 25-31.

Despite being drawn in the same half as China’s Chen Long, Wei Feng said: “I have not had a good year, and I want to prove to everyone including myself that I can be a better player.

“I have made two team finals this year (Thomas Cup and Commonwealth Games) but I have not fared well in the individual events.

“My draw is not the easiest, but I’m challenging myself. I made it to the third round last year, and I want to push myself even more at this World Championships,” Wei Feng said.

The Kedah-born, who failed to qualify for the men’s singles semi-finals at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games, is also hoping for a third round clash with second seeded Chen Long.

“I’m looking forward to meeting Chen Long actually. The last time we played was at the China Open last year. I lost but I want to see how I match up with him now.

“At the same time I got to be realistic, my opening match against England’s Rajiv Ouseph is going to be tough as well.

“If I beat Rajiv, I may have to face India’s K. Srikanth which will be another tough battle. I just want to remain focused and do my best,” added Wei Feng, who crashed out of the third round last year, losing to eventual champion Lin Dan.

Wei Feng will be accompanied by World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, who looks good for his first ever world title in the absence of China’s five-time World Champion Lin Dan.
