Moderate Merdeka Day celebration: KL Mayor

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will organise several moderate events to celebrate Merdeka this year, in respect of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and flight MH17 tragedy.

Its mayor, Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib said Merdeka day activities this year will focus more on fostering love for the country among city people.

“We won’t be holding events big concerts like we used to but instead will encourage appreciation of independence,” he told a press conference after launching the DBKL ‘Kibar Jalur Gemilang’ campaign, here today.

He said the two tragedies will not dampen the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians, but will instead increase feelings of love for the country.

Ahmad Phesal urged city folks, premise owners, government buildings, hotels, homes and vehicle owners to support the campaign.

“We shouldn’t complain about spending a little money on decorating our homes or offices with the Jalur Gemilang,” he said.

In conjunction with the event, DBKL distributed over 2,000 Jalur Gemilang to NGO representatives, traders, residents associations and taxi drivers.

A recipient, Coliseum CEO Terry Kok said he appreciates DBKL’s efforts to enliven Merdeka day celebrations.

“It helps to boost out spirit in times like this. Everybody has to be united as we celebrate our Merdeka Day,” he said.--BERNAMA
