Man sent to gallows for drugs

ALOR STAR: A woman broke down in tears after the Alor Star High Court sent her husband to the gallows for trafficking in drugs in Sungai Petani in January.

The woman, who was accompanied by several relatives, wept after Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab passed down the sentence to her husband, A. Nagendran, 28.

Zaki ruled that Nagendran had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case at the end of the defence case.

Nagendran was charged with trafficking in 21.4g of heroin and 6.1g of monoacetylmorphines at No. 58, Jalan Belakang Hospital, Sungai Petani, at 12.10pm on Jan 5 this year. The accused nodded and glanced at his wife upon hearing the sentence.

Earlier, his counsel, Leonard Raj, pleaded for a lighter sentence as his client was married with a child and it was his first offence.

Zaki said the court had to mete out the death sentence as it was the only available punishment under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Deputy public prosecutor Ayu Rohaiza Khazali prosecuted.
