Weekend watch: Special telecast for day of mourning

As Malaysian flags are flown at half-mast today, the nation mourns for those who died in the MH17 tragedy.

Some of the remains of the Malaysians who were killed in the tragedy are brought home today from the Netherlands, and the Malaysian government has declared today a national day of mourning.

The events of the morning will be covered in a live telecast on the programme, Grandstand Istiadat Penghantaran Jenazah Tragedi Pesawat MH17, from 7.30am to 5pm on TV1.

The coverage will include a special report on the MH17 tragedy, the diplomatic efforts of the Malaysian government to enable the safe return of all the remains of the deceased citizens to Malaysian soil and live feeds from Amsterdam.

Local terrestrial channels TV3, ntv7, 8TV and TV9 will also offer live coverage of the ceremony.

The solemn, dignified affair, titled MH17 — Malaysia Berkabung, will be aired from 9.30am, preceded and followed by segments of recitations from the Al-Quran.

On Sunday, catch the 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan at 11pm on ntv7. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, it stars Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel. A ballet dancer wins the lead part in the ballet Swan Lake and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan, the Princess Odette. But she slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards in 2011 (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing) with Portman winning one for her performance.

Horror thriller Silent House airs tomorrow on TV3 at 12.30am. A girl is trapped inside her family’s lakeside retreat and is unable to contact the outside world as supernatural forces haunt the house. The film stars Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese and Eric Sheffer Stevens.

New comedy series The Crazy Ones starring the recently deceased Robin Williams premieres on Sunday at 10pm on ntv7. It follows the quirky adventures of a father and daughter team, Simon (Williams) and Sydney (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who head an ad agency with their staff of screwball copywriters. The pilot episode sees Simon trying to persuade Kelly Clarkson to sing a jingle for their client, McDonald’s, which backfires. It also stars James Wolk.

Watch out for The Making Of Lucy on Sunday at 10am on 8TV to get a behind-the-scenes look at the latest sci-fi action film from French director and writer Luc Besson. Scarlett Johansson plays the titular role as a regular woman who, after being accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. The film also stars Morgan Freeman, Amr Waked and Choi Min-sik.

POSEIDON (TV2, 2pm)

On New Year’s Eve, the luxury ocean liner Poseidon capsizes after being swamped by a rogue wave. The survivors attempt to escape the sinking ship. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell and Emmy Rossum.

SNAKES ON A PLANE (TV2, 10.03pm)

A FBI agent takes on a plane full of deadly and poisonous snakes, deliberately released to kill a witness being flown from Honolulu to Los Angeles to testify against a mob boss. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Julianna Margulies and Nathan Phillips.

STALAG 17 (TV2, 12.30AM)

When two escaping American World War II prisoners are killed, the German POW barracks black marketeer, J.J. Sefton, is suspected of being an informer. Starring William Holden, Don Taylor and Otto Preminger.

HINDUSTAN KI KASAM (TV3, 2PM)

A pair of twins, separated at birth and growing up in different circumstances and rival countries, must work together later in life to save Pakistan’s Prime Minister from being assassinated by terrorists. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan and Manisha Koirala.

NENEK RANGGI (TV3, 10PM)

A mother with a successful business who married young must now contend with the prospect of grandchildren when her daughter intends to marry young too. Starring Maria Farida, Lufya Omar and Shukri Yahaya.

MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS (ntv7, 3PM)

A very unlucky woman who loses her husband in a scuba diving accident discovers that her left eye can see ghosts after she is involved in a car crash. The first ghost she sees is her old friend who died as a teenager and the two develop a seemingly awkward but intimate relationship. Starring Sammi Cheng, Lau Ching-Wan and Sean Lau.

THREE OF A KIND (8TV, 8.30PM)

Dragon Lone, a famous wuxia novelist with extensive writer’s block and who nurses a desire to be a fighter has to deal with his overprotective emotions towards his daughter when she falls in love with her employer. Starring Michael Hui, Lau Ching Wan and Miriam Yeung.

SHE’S ALL THAT (TV9, 10PM)

When popular high school jock Zach Siler is dumped by his prom-queen girlfriend, he makes a bet that he can turn an unattractive girl into a prom queen, but ends up falling in love with her. Starring Freddie Prinze Jr, Rachael Leigh Cook and Matthew Lillard.
