Five men hunted by police for robbing jewellery shop

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are tracking down five men in connection with a goldsmith heist in a hypermarket at Taman Connaught, here, today.

In the 12.30pm incident, five men armed with three sledgehammers and a weapon believed to be a pistol, barged into the premises.

Cheras district acting police chief Superintendent Abdul Rahim Hamzah said there were two sales manager during the robbery which happened less than three minutes.

"The suspect armed with the weapon believed to be a pistol pointed it towards the ceiling and threatened the workers but no shots were fired," he said.

The suspects in ski masks then smashed the glass display and grabbed twenty trays of jewellery worth about RM900,000.

Abdul Rahim said there was no security guards at the premises as it was fully dependent on the hypermarket's security.

Abdul Rahim said suspects then fled using a car.

"Early investigation revealed they were heading towards Petaling Jaya area," he said.

Footages obtained from the closed-circuit television camera showed the suspects are Malaysians and one of them was a plump-sized man.

The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the penal code for gang and armed robbery.
