Students learn about patriotism

KUALA LUMPUR: MANY schools in the country have lined up a string of patriotic activities throughout this month to commemorate Malaysia’s 57th Independence Day and promote a greater sense of unity.

Trivia, poem recitals, singing, video, cooking and decorative competitions are some of initiatives adopted by the schools to spur the students’ interests.

Sekolah Seri Puteri Cyberjaya (SSPC) students’ affairs senior assistant Monarazmah Abd Razak said active involvement of both teachers and students would spark the pupils’ enthusiasm to appreciate our Independence Day.

“The month of Merdeka is definitely an educational month.

“This is why it is important to have a comprehensive approach involving teachers of different subjects when promoting cultural activities that nurture patriotism,” she said.

“This way, students are able to gradually appreciate the harmony that our country enjoys,” she added.

Monarazmah said more activities are in store for students of SSPC during Merdeka week.

“Among them is the ‘Pertandingan Video Sejarah’ where students can submit a video creation of either documentary, animation or drama of any prominent nationalist, and the ‘Program Bicara Tokoh’ where all 868 students are expected to participate,” she said.

SK Taman Bukit Indah (SKTBI) senior assistant (administration) Mohd Yusof Hamzah said it is important to instil the patriotic fervour among the younger generation at an early age.

“Extensive programmes that inculcate patriotism should be both exciting and educational to captivate the students’ interest,” he said.

SK Bukit Jelutong student, Koh Ju Kiat,12, said he looks forward to the activities held during Merdeka month every year.

“The celebration is about respecting one another and living in harmony, regardless of race or religion. It is the time when I truly feel connected with my peers,” he said.

Koh added that he is eager to visit historical sites during Merdeka Day with his family this year since the celebration falls on a weekend.

SKTBI Year Six pupil Abdul Rahman Putra Hersafril, 12, said students should take upon themselves to learn the history of the country so that they would appreciate the struggles of our forefathers.

“The month of Merdeka also reminds us to stand united as this country has come a long way since Tunku Abdul Rahman declared ‘Merdeka!’ 57 years ago.”

“I am grateful that my school has given us the opportunity to be involved in activities that promote patriotism,” he added.
