Campaign to curb graft

KUALA LUMPUR: TRANSPARENCY International will today introduce a campaign that targets impunity for corruption at systemic and individual levels by engaging in cross border transfers, limiting the movement of graft offenders and monitoring the use of illicit assets.

Its president, Datuk Akhbar Satar, said the campaign, named “Unmask The Corrupt”, was aimed at ending the secrecy that aided the shifting of the proceeds of corruption across borders.

“The 24-month campaign’s goal is to make it difficult for the corrupt to move and enjoy their illicit assets, ultimately reducing the incentive for theft of public money, as well as solicitation of bribes.”

Akbar said the campaign planned to expose the corrupt who transferred stolen assets abroad.

He said Australia, Brazil, France, Indonesia, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States had agreed to work with Malaysia to close legal loopholes that could facilitate the transfer of stolen or illicit assets across international borders.
