Open manholes pose threat

KUALA LUMPUR: PEDESTRIANS in Segambut Dalam are at risk of falling into uncovered manholes as some drain covers are missing.

Some Good Samaritans have tried to cover up some of the manholes with used tyres or pieces of wood.

Christopher Chee, 33, said the exposed manholes were a danger to pedestrians, especially the elderly.

“They may not be able to see that the covers are missing and fall into the monsoon drain as the holes are quite big,” he said.

Restaurant operator Ilhamdi Sahruli, 23, said most of the pedestrians were factory workers.

“Usually, I see them walking back in groups after work. I am afraid that one of them might slip into the drain,” he said.

Farhan Mustafa, 30, said he believed that the drain covers were stolen.

“There have been numerous cases of drain covers being stolen, especially in the Segambut area,” he said.

“I think the authorities should take stern action against the culprits to prevent the problem from getting worse.”
