State literacy competition

GEORGE TOWN: The Indian Association of Penang is organising the 15th Literacy Competition for Tamil schools on Sept 28 at Phor Tay Private High School in Bagan Jermal here.

The competition consists of eight categories, including essay writing, oratory, elocution, storytelling and singing from 9.30am to 2pm.

The competition would be conducted in Tamil, Malay and English.

The association’s vice-president N.G. Ganapathy expects more than 500 students from 28 Tamil schools in the state to participate in the competition.

“This is the first time there will be a gathering of children from kindergartens and Tamil schools in a competition.

“Contestants will get a chance to win
RM10,000 worth of prizes.”

There would also be an award presentation ceremony for Tamil students who had scored well in the UPSR and SPM exams last year.

Ganapathy said Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey would officiate the competition while Deputy Education Minister II P.v Kamalanathan would present prizes to the winners.
