City Hall collects RM600,000

KUALA LUMPUR: City Hall has collected RM639,760 from 14,597 traffic compounds after it offered the discount rates last month.

Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said the payments were made between Aug 18 and Sept 11.

The special rates, which are effective until yearend, is to encourage motorists to settle outstanding traffic compounds before they are blacklisted by the Road Transport Department.

“About 5.4 million compounds were issued since 2007 that have yet to be settled,” he said after the launch of City Hall’s 45th Enforcement Day parade yesterday.

“If all motorists realise that stopping in a yellow box or stopping at the yellow line is wrong, for instance, then I think traffic congestion can be reduced.

“City Hall is working closely with RTD to blacklist errant motorists.

“About, 2,800 have been blacklisted. The drivers will not be able to renew their licences and road tax until they have settled their compounds,” he said.

Motorists are able to enjoy the discounted rates through payments made at any Pos Malaysia and DBKL payment counters. They can also pay online through MyEG.

For parking meter offences, the reduced fine is RM30 instead of the original compound of RM100. The discounted rates are RM30, RM50 and RM100 for motorcycles, cars and heavy vehicles, respectively.

Until August, a total of RM4,572,981 in fines from 807,531 summonses, have been issued for various offences such as littering and running an unlicensed business.

Phesal also said City Hall was still discussing with the AG’s Chambers for additional magistrates.

“We would like the magistrates courts’ sessions to be increased so that we can solve more cases,” he said.

Phesal said there would be an additional 80 motorcycles and 15 scooters for traffic wardens.

“To increase public safety at recreational parks, we will add 40 bicycles and 10 horses by yearend,” he said. By C. Premananthini and Masriwanie Muhamading
