We will match any toll rate hike, says Singapore minister

KUALA TERENGGANU: Singapore is likely to match Malaysia’s move on the toll rates for foreign vehicles entering the republic.

It’s Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad said the imposition of the new rates corresponded with the move by the Malaysian government to increase toll charges at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex at the Johor Causeway from Aug 1.

“The hike is Singapore’s policy. If the Malaysian government raises its toll rate, we, too, will increase ours. But, I hope this will not affect relations.

“If the Malaysian government reduces the toll rates, we will do the same to standardise charges.”

He was speaking after visiting the Islamic Civilisation Park here yesterday. Masagos Zulkifli is in Terengganu for a two-day working visit which began yesterday. The visit is part of Singapore’s efforts to strengthen relations between the republic and states in Malaysia.

Masagos Zulkifli said Singapore was willing to discuss with the Malaysian government on the toll issue.

“Singapore is willing to delay the toll hike but this will depend on the outcome of discussions with Malaysia. But, so far there has been no discussion between ministers of the two countries,” he said.
