Diversity makes us beautiful and colourful

I REFER to your front page report “United in Harmony” (NST, Sept 16).

Malaysians celebrated 51st Malaysia Day because Sabah and Sarawak made the decision to come together with Malaya to establish Malaysia in 1963.

Our country has progressed by leaps and bounds through the cooperation of the various races and ethnicities in a proudly multicultural and multireligious nation, collectively bringing tandem development in Sabah and Sarawak, despite attempts by certain parties to undermine unity.

Like a rainbow, Malaysians living together  is symbolic of these colours. To a foreigner, our colourful culture, streets and stories seem like a page out of an ancient folk tale.

As a diverse and culturally vibrant country, Malaysia holds together the multitudes of outlooks, lifestyles and traditions. The symbolism of colour stands out and influences every aspect of life, be it religion, politics, festivals or celebrations.

As Malaysians, we have the power to make our country a better place to live in by giving moderate views and ideas for the nation to progress in all aspects of politics, economic and social development, without the fear of extremist groups or politicians stirring up unsubstantiated accusations, or religious emotions among simple folks, or using seditious remarks to frighten the people from speaking the truth.

Let us all work with the government of the day to achieve success, prosperity, fairness and justice for all Malaysians, abiding by the tenets of the Rukun Negara and the Federal Constitution, placing due respect for our rulers, and by being patriotic and living a moderate life. We should always celebrate a happy Malaysia Day with the pride of 1Malaysia.
