Nabil, Wei Ron in historic podium double for Malaysia

NABIL Jan Al Jeffri settled for second spot as Tan Wei Ron made it an historic two Malaysians on the podium in Round 19 of the German F3 Cup in wet conditions at the Sachsenring yesterday.

Desperately needing a victory
to keep any hopes of winning
the title alive, Team Motopark’s Nabil was again left trailing
championship leader Markus Pommer of the Lotus team, who inched ever closer to the title with the
victory.

In third was Wei Ron of the Van Amersfoort Racing team who secured his first podium which saw both Malaysians in the series sharing the podium for the first time ever.

Nabil, 21, had qualified third fastest behind Pommer and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Sam MacLeod yesterday after starting the weekend fourth fastest in practice.

Wei Ron had qualified fourth and capitalised on misfortunes to MacLeod, then held his position well to take a deserved podium
finish.

“It started drizzling when we were on the grid and then it rained heavily.

“The team decided to change to wet tyres and we started again behind the safety car,” said Petronas Talent Programme driver Nabil.

“My aim was just to finish on the podium and I was lucky to have got second spot.

“I was feeling comfortable with the car and was trying hard to catch Pommer.

“I even clocked the second fastest time in the race, so now I’m looking forward to the second race.”

Rounds 20 and 21 will conclude the weekend today with Nabil needing to win and hope Pommer drops out of his dominant top spot in order to take the title race to the final weekend at the Hockenheimring in two weeks. By Arnaz M. Khairul
