Umno Youth confident of tracing 1,000 young voters in Pengkalan Kubor

KOTA KINABALU: Umno Youth remains optimistic of contacting 1,000 young registered voters to return and vote in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election in Tumpat, Kelantan on Sept 25.

Umno Youth chief, Khairy Jamaluddin said they have identified about 1,000 of the approximately 5,000 young voters who are believed to be outside Tumpat district or outside Kelantan.

"We still have four days to contact them to return and fulfill their obligation to vote, by giving their full support to Barisan Nasional (BN)," Khairy, who is also the Minister of Youth and Sports, told reporters after launching the FitMalaysia-Sabah programme in Teluk Likas here, today.

When asked if he was confident BN would retain the Pengkalan Kubor state seat, Khairy, who is also the Member of Parliament for Rembau, said it was still too early to say but there was stiff competition for the seat.

The by-election is being held following the death of BN's Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar due to liver cancer on Aug 20.

In the by-election, Barisan Nasional candidate Mat Razi Mat Ail, 48, will face PAS' Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim, 56, and Independent, Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, 47.

In the 13th general election, Noor Zahidi defeated Parti Keadilan Rakyat candidate Saharun Ibrahim and Izat Bukhary, an independent candidate, with a majority of 1,736 votes. - Bernama
