Musical to raise funds for kids

KLANG: TWO cast members from the new musical Larger Than Life, a tribute to Broadway and West End, recently visited Kiwanis Down’s Syndrome School in Jalan Kampar to spend time with the children and learn more about the chromosomal disorder.

British theatre veteran Nigel Richards, best known for his role as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, was joined by Penang-born theatre singer Tan Soo Suan to brighten up the day.

“I don’t always get a chance to enjoy moments like this, so being with the children here today is a delight.

“I got to know each of them individually, engage with their parents on a personal level and see how the trained teachers coached and guided the kids through their exercises.”

Dama Music Theatre Company (DMTC) artistic director Pun Kai Loon said the visit was also to highlight the partnership between the orchestra and Kiwanis Klang as one of the event hosts of the musical which starts on Saturday.

“People with Down’s Syndrome have specific healthcare needs that are above and beyond standard medical care.

“It is heartwarming to know that there is an established non-profit foundation such as Kiwanis, fighting for the welfare of children diagnose with the condition,” he said.

Pun said the Larger Than Life musical will be held in conjunction with DMTC’s 20th Anniversary celebration at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, featuring musical pieces from South Pacific, The King and I, Cats, Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera.

“A special slot of the showcase starring Richards and Soo Suan will help raise funds for the centre on Oct 4 at 3pm,” he added.

Kiwanis Down’s Syndrome Foundation chairman for Klang Shirley Sobey said the foundation’s presence was to assist and guide families with children diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome.

“These special children come to us with little speaking and writing skills as well as gross motor control. Many of them have congenital defects, which require surgery that may cost a lot.

“We hope that the public will look forward to watching the show and get their tickets in support of the centre,” she said.
