System may be installed at 4 more junctions

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Road Safety Department director Muhammad Heeza Hassan said ongoing advocacy programmes are needed to continuously remind motorists on the road regulations.

“Actually, if everyone follows the law, there is no need for such voice reminder.

“However, it is not the case here. On our part, we are carrying out campaigns by distributing brochures to motorists or organising talks for corporate and government staff, among others.”

Besides Jalan Raja Laut/Jalan Parlimen, the system is currently implemented at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman/Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Raja Laut/Jalan Parlimen and Jalan Merah Cagar in Sri Petaling.

The system, he said, is considered as an education tool, although enforcement action can also help to reduce the number of motorists flouting the law.

Apart from the few intersections installed with the voice reminder system, City Hall is also looking at implementing it at four busy junctions in the city.

They are Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman/Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Ampang/Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Ipoh/Jalan Tun Razak intersections.

“The system, which works 24 hours a day, helps reduce traffic congestion by reminding motorists not to stop in yellow boxes.

“The offence is punishable with a RM300 summons under Road Transport Act 1959 and from January to August this year, a total of 90 summonses have been issued to motorists by the City Hall for the offence.

“City Hall traffic wardens will issue compounds to motorists on the spot or would direct offenders to move out of the yellow box and reroute their destination.

“With this new system, motorists are more aware when they commit an offence because the speaker will prompt them and an officer will be there to make sure that they move their vehicles immediately,” he said.
