Stint marked by success, controversy

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim officially ended his six-year tenure as Selangor menteri besar yesterday, a stint often marked by both success and controversy.

Khalid was appointed after the 12th general election in 2008, becoming the 14th Selangor MB and the first not to be a member of Barisan Nasional.

A well-known corporate figure before he entered politics, he was praised for improving efficiency and boosting the state’s social and economic growth during his stint as menteri besar.

However, he was also criticised for his role in several high-profile controversies, such as the months-long water crisis which affected some 1.3 million households in the state earlier this year.

Previously, Khalid served as the chief executive officer of the fund management firm Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) from 1979 to 1994.
