Hoping for sustainability

THE Water and Energy Consumer Association of Malaysia (Wecam) would like to congratulate Mohamed Azmin Ali on being appointed the 15th Menteri Besar of Selangor.

At the same time, we would like to express our position on the future of the Selangor water situation, as below:

ALL water supply industry agreements and deals that have been signed during the tenure of the previous MB must be disclosed to the people. If they are not beneficial to the people, then they should be reviewed.

AN implementable timeline for the restructuring of the Selangor water supply industry and this must be made publicly available. Too much time has been wasted and Selangor remains as one of few states that have yet to migrate to the new licensing regime under National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

THE current status of the Pahang Selangor Raw Water Transfer Scheme must be made publicly available.

THE current status of the Selangor water supply situation, raw water storage and actions being taken, must be made publicly available, especially on the Sungai Selangor water dam level, which is still lingering at critical levels (33-34 per cent).

THE Selangor first-20m3 free water programme must be reviewed and should be given only to targeted groups, for example, the hardcore poor.

STOP all development at gazetted water catchment areas, both upstream and downstream. The minimum buffer zone for the water catchment area must be reviewed.

THE non-revenue water (NRW) rate in Selangor must be reduced through holistic leakage management strategy. The NRW rate in Selangor is currently recorded at 34.5 per cent.

STOP all sorts of politicking, especially when dealing with water, which has taken a toll on the rakyat of Selangor.

Transparency and consistency on the implementation of plans will be the key to ensuring a better future for Selangor. We at Wecam are looking forward to working together with the MB in order to enhance sustainability of the water supply to the people of Selangor.
