On course for gold

BAD weather forced the cancellation of all races on the penultimate day of the Asian Games sailing competition yesterday though Malaysia are still on course for a gold medal.

Faizal Norizan and Ahmad Syukri Abdul Aziz both need to avoid a disaster in today’s last two races to be sure of winning the men’s 420 two-man dinghy class.

They hold a net five-point lead over Japan’s Ibuki Koizumi-Kotaro Matsuo with the result of one more race still yet to be discarded.

National sailors also hold second place in three other events.

Khairulnizam Afendy is four points off first place in the men’s laser, Dhiauddin Rozaini faces a real fight to hold on to the silver medal in the boys’ optimist and Nuraisyah Jamil-Umi Norwahida Sallahuddin need to make up six points for gold in the women’s 420.

In open match racing, the Malaysian team skippered by Jeremy Koo are in joint-second place with Japan after winning six of eight races in the nine-boat field. Singapore are top with an 8-0 record.

The top two teams enter the final to decide the gold medallists today.
