11MP to focus on project privatisation

THE government is looking to offer various tools for the privatisation of new government projects to be undertaken under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), said Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.

Currently, the government is actively engaging with various ministries, agencies and stakeholders concerning the formulation and finalisation of the development blueprint, which is set to be tabled in Parliament in nine months.

“We are working with various ministries as well as agencies on the formulation of the 11MP,” he said after the closing of Khazanah Megatrends Forum 2014, here, yesterday.

“In the meantime, we will also come up with various tools for the privatisation of government projects, which will be done in a proper and transparent manner.”

The 11MP is a comprehensive blueprint to be prepared by the Economic Planning Unit to chart the economic direction of the country from 2016 to 2020.

It is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament in June next year.

Earlier, Abdul Wahid stressed that the government, through the New Economic Model (NEM), intended to ensure that the nation’s growth was sustainable and inclusive.

“The inclusiveness of NEM is not only to bridge the divide between the upper and lower-income groups, but also between the urban and rural communities as well as different ethnic groups,” he said.

“Inclusive growth means we should not only focus on income levels, but the overall well-being of Malaysians as a whole.

“Towards this end, the government has established a Well-Being Index, which concluded that the overall well-being of Malaysians has improved with an index score of 125.4 between its base year in 2000 and 2012.”
