KULAIJAYA: A PET adoption drive was held at IOI Mall here recently. The event, held in conjunction with World Animal Day 2014, which is celebrated worldwide on Oct 4, drew many dog and cat lovers.
Among the booths present was Homeless and Orphan Pets Exist (Hope), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), that was recently accorded the Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Award for its work in helping stray animals.
Two puppies were adopted from the booth at the event.
The booth allowed pet lovers to adopt a stray puppy for RM350, which covered the vaccination costs.
“The response was encouraging. We need to create an awareness that dogs from a shelter can make a loving pet,” said a volunteer who wished to remain anonymous.
Global Pets Sdn Bhd, the largest pet shop chain in the state was also on hand to support the drive.
It was the first time the company participated in such an event.
Global Pets veterinarian and co-owner Dr Tan Check Nam gave a talk titled “Trap, Neuter and Release” at the event.
Dr Tan spoke about the health benefits of neutering and spaying.
“To trap, neuter and release a dog is encouraged as it would help to control the stray animal population,” said Dr Tan.
He said owners would find their female dogs got pregnant easily as they could slip out of the gate, or a stray dog could sneak in, resulting in mating.
“To be safe, it is better to get the pet neutered or spayed,” he said.
Global Pets has a medical centre, a pet resort, a grooming academy, retail stores and veterinary clinics.
Some 44 dogs and cats underwent free blood tests and free ear checks, offered by Global Pets, at the event.
Also present was Stray Cats Rescue And Treatment Community Help (Scratch), another NGO animal welfare organisation.
The Scratch booth sold T-shirts and handmade bookmarks to raise funds for its organisation.
