It has no place in varsities

IT must be made clear to the authorities that they must act in quickly to prevent or minimise ragging.

The declaration by vice-chancellors of several universities — that ragging would not be tolerated, and that those affected, if any, should lodge reports immediately — is the right action.

Although ragging in institutions of learning has been happening for ages, it has become ominously clear that its intention of forming a bond between seniors and juniors is lost.

Ragging, particularly the sort that leads to death, has no place in institutions of learning.
