BUTTERWORTH: SIVASANGARI Subramaniam was the only player to successfully defend her title at the PBA 12th Penang (Malaysian) Junior Open 2014 at the Nicol David International Squash Centre in Bukit Dumbar recently.
The 15-year-old Kedah lass defeated Kuala Lumpur’s Andrea Lee Jia Qi 12-10, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6 in a thrilling Under-17 final.
Sivasangari, who had won the Under-13 and Under-15 categories previously, was really happy as she had to overcome some tough opponents en route to the Under-17 title.
“I am now looking forward to the Asian Junior Championship and targeting to win the title. Last year, I lost in the semi-finals and a year before that, I won the Under-15 title.
“I am also looking forward to successfully defending my British Open title next year,” said Sivasangari.
Sivasangari said she would be playing in the Under-15 category in both the tournaments and is expecting tough challenge from her teammates and India’s players.
SRAM’s Ng Eain You jumped for joy after defeating teammate Mohd Syafiq Kamal 15-17, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8 in the boys’ Under-19 final.
For Eain You, defeating Mohd Syafiq was sweet revenge as he had lost to the latter in last year’s Under-17 final.
Eain You said: “It was a 50-50 match but luck was on my side. Mohd Syafiq is a good player and I enjoy playing with him”.
He said he was also looking forward to the Asian Junior championship and was targeting the title.
