Cycling to beat breast cancer

KUALA LUMPUR: OVER 500 people participated in Wacoal Pink Ribbon Campaign recently, which was aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer.

For this year, the campaign featured a cycling activity which covered a 20km route, from The New Straits Times Press (NSTP) headquarters in Jalan Riong, to other parts of the city via Jalan Bangsar and back to the NSTP office.

Participants were clad in custom-made pink T-shirts bearing the words “Beat Breast Cancer”.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who flagged off the event at 8am, praised organiser Wacoal Malaysia for its effort in creating more awareness of breast cancer.

Wacoal Malaysia director and general manager Vincent Leong said the lingerie manufacturer has been actively promoting its series of Pink Ribbon campaigns through various means since 2003 as a way to contribute back to the society.

“Previously, we used to distribute pamphlets and organise exhibition on breast cancer.

“For this year, we came up with the cycling activity hoping that we could reach out to more people.

“We are happy to have NSTP as our media partner. Hopefully, this collaboration will continue in the future,” said Leong.

Participant Fam Yoke Leng, 43, said she was impressed with the way the event was organised.

“I have been participating in a number of cycling events in the last three years and Wacoal Malaysia has definitely done a great job in making this activity safe and fun.

“However, I believe more could have been done to promote this event as many were not aware that this was a breast cancer awareness programme despite us wearing the pink T-shirts,” said Fam.
