Penang on a rampage

GEORGE TOWN: PENANG and Pahang shared honours at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council Under-12 bowling competition at the Mega Bowling Centre in MegaMall Pinang in Prai recently.

Penang made a clean sweep of all five gold medals available in the boys category while the girls clinched two gold, and the remaining three gold were swept by the Pahang girls.

Penang won the boys challenge trophy while Pahang won the girls trophy.

Penang were also on cloud nine when they won the Malaysian Schools Tenpin Bowling overall champions title, after a lapse of 15 years.

Megat Zaqrul Haiqal Megat Zairuddin, 11, was the toast of the Penang contingent winning gold in the doubles, Masters and all events, and another gold in the team event.

The SJK(C) Chung Hwa 3 year five pupil said he did not expect to win so many gold, though he felt sad at not winning the singles event.

“My confidence level was low because I thought the 12-year-old boys would be better than me, especially those from the other states. This unexpected win has motivated me to perform better next year,” Megat Zaqrul Haiqal said.

Muhammad Hariz Adlan Azman, the younger sibling of national youth bowler Nur Amirah Auni Azman, was also in impressive form.

The SK Pauh Jaya year five pupil won gold in the singles, doubles and team while collecting silver and bronze in the Masters and all events respectively.

Nur Amirah Farihah Azhlan was the other contributor to the seven-gold haul, winning the singles and all-events.

Pahang’s darling was Norsyamira Abu Samah who had a hand in the remaining three gold medals. She won the doubles, Masters and team event.

Penang team manager Hisham Salleh said victory was very sweet, especially winning the Malaysian Schools Tenpin Bowling overall title after 15 years.

A delighted Hisham said they had been playing bridesmaid to Selangor for far too long and it was their turn to shine.
