Deepavali is a day to discard pomposity, foolishness

DEEPAVALI, the Festival Of Lights, signifies the victory of light over darkness. Hence, Deepavali sends the message that this is a day for knowledge to prevail over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair.

Consumers should bear in mind that any activities on this day should serve this purpose.

The Consumers Association
Of Penang (CAP) urges the people to have a simple celebration, discarding extravagance and pomposity.

Simplicity is the peak of civilisation. We need to eat in moderation by reducing food rich in sugar and fat.

This is the day when food is
in abundance and one can yield to temptation.

It is sad that a day for celebration becomes a day for the deterioration of health for many due to their uncontrolled indulgence in food and drinks.

Spending hard-earned money lavishly on the festival is not advisable.

It is sad to see families spending thousands of ringgit just on firecrackers.

We must ensure that such foolishness is not repeated.

Deepavali is also becoming a day for youth to pick up the drinking habit, which throws them and
their family into a lifelong predicament.

On this day, we should forget our past enmities, shed our ego, appreciate our relations and strengthen family ties.

Let us also not forget the economically deprived, the senior citizens, the infirm and the socially disadvantaged.

Our small contribution to them will make a vast difference and bring happiness to their lives.

CAP wishes all Hindus a very happy Deepavali.
