Police sergeant claims trial to corruption charge

PETRA JAYA: A traffic police sergeant detained during the ongoing Op Belot was charged at a Special Corruption Court here today with accepting a RM1,500 bribe last year.

Zainudin Samad, 52, attached with the Kota Samarahan district traffic division, claimed trial to the charge under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

The accused, who has been in service for 34 years, was alleged to have accepted RM1,500 from self-employed Rano Paimin at a cafeteria in Desa Ilmu Phase, Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa, Kota Samarahan near here at 5.50pm on July 8, 2013.

The money was an inducement for Zainudin to not take actions against Rano under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Zainudin faces the maximum 20 years' jail and a fine of not less than five times the value of bribe or RM10,000, whichever higher, upon conviction.

He was released on RM10,000 in court bail and one surety who is a permanent worker with at least three months pay slip.

Judge Nixon Kennedy Kembong fixed hearing for three days starting Nov 17.

MACC prosecuting officer Ikhwan Mohd Ibrahim prosecuted while the accused was represented by counsel Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi.
