Walking to help kids with diabetes

KUALA LUMPUR: Columbia Asia recently announced the launch of Walk For Cure 2014, a global initiative held in conjunction with World Diabetes Month and World Diabetes Day on Nov 14.

“We want to engage the public with a more exciting, adventurous and activity-filled programme,” said Columbia Asia chief executive officer Kelvin Tan.

“The aim is to increase diabetes awareness and raise funds for Diabetes Malaysia, with a programme which promises to be enjoyable for everyone.”

He said funds raised would be used to provide supportive care for underprivileged children with diabetes nationwide.

This year’s event which has a fun-walk theme will take place at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, here, on Nov 16.

Participants can take part in Zumba, a limbo rock challenge and dance walking. There will also be a mini concert with live music and dance performances at the finish line.

A recent study by the prestigious British Medical Journal, Lancet, suggested that 49 per cent of women and 44 per cent of men in Malaysia are obese. It also indicated that Malaysia has climbed up the obesity ranks.

“It is vital for us to raise awareness of this disease, as diabetes is a major cause for many life-threatening diseases,” said Tan.

The Malaysian Blind Football team and the Malaysian Para-Badminton team will also be taking part. They will be engaging in fun activities with other participants during the mini concert.

The Malaysian Blind Football team, which recently won a silver medal at the 2014 Asean Para Games in Myanmar, will be challenging participants to take part in a friendly futsal match.

The event is supported by Hot Shoes, MBO Cinema, Panasonic, Acqua 9, Celebrity Fitness, Watsons, Cake and E-Ions Corporation Sdn Bhd.
